You can calculate the Flesch-Kincaid grade level of text using Microsoft Word by doing the following:

Copy text from another program by highlighting the text.

Go to Edit and Copy.

Open Microsoft Word.

Click on Edit and Paste.

Do a spell check.

At the end of the spell check, a screen should appear with the readability level. If it doesn’t, you need to activate this feature.

On the PC:

Click on Tools.

Go to Options.

Click on the Spelling and Grammar tab.

Click on the box next to Show Readability Statistics.

On the Mac:

Click on Edit.

Scroll to Preferences.

Click on the Spelling and Grammar Tab.

Click on the box next to Show Readability Statistics.

Click OK.

The next time you use spell check, a box will appear that shows the readability level.
